Stubbed Toe Nail Healing Process question

Hello, on September 14, 2008, an opening door hit the front end of my big toe nail and injured it. It bruised and was sore. I saw a doctor a few days after to make sure I was caring for it properly and by then, the fluid had created a drainage outlet on its own, from the underside of the nail. I have managed to keep the nail clean and free of infection and the old nail has remained intact. However, the old nail is starting to show signs of releasing because it has been pushed out a little by the new nail that is starting to grow out. Should I avoid removing the nail if it detaches from the sides that are keeping it on or is it okay for it to fall off on its own at this point?
